Becoming an Academy

We have created this web-page to keep you informed of our transition to becoming an academy and joining the Hartismere Family of Schools.

You may be aware the government has been encouraging schools to consider becoming academies. Academies are independent, state-funded schools, which receive their funding direct from central government, rather than the local authority.

The Governing Body for Somerleyton Primary school has been considering several different academy options over the last 4 years; we have always maintained the principal that we will choose a partnership which put our children’s education at the centre of their focus, celebrating our uniqueness, whilst supporting the ethos and values of our school. We have recently had two ‘Outstanding’ academy trusts who have approached our school, registering an interest in us joining them. Both of these Academy Trusts have fulfilled the governing body’s criteria.

On Friday 16th June 2017 the Governing body passed a resolution to begin the process of joining a Multi Academy Trust.

The benefits of becoming an academy are as follows:

  • not having to follow the national curriculum
  • having greater freedom to set their own term times
  • having greater freedom to manage their own admissions
  • creating formal partnerships with other schools
  • Securing the future of smaller rural schools

What has happened so far:

  • We have successfully applied to become an academy through the Department for Education
  • The Governing body chose to become part of a Multi-academy Trust (MAT)- Hartismere Family of Schools
  • We are currently in the process of transferring responsibilities to the academy trust, including the school staff and property
  • We anticipate this process should be complete by the 1st of April 2018
